Iran has turned global supply chains into a weapon, building lethal drones from parts sourced across continents. The Shahed—a cheap, disposable kamikaze drone—has reshaped modern warfare by flooding battlefields with swarms that overwhelm expensive air defenses.

The drone that broke the rules of war

The Shahed didn’t come from a traditional state-run arms factory. Iran assembled it using components from civilian markets, with China serving as the main hub for critical parts. This approach lets mid-sized powers evade sanctions and produce weapons at a fraction of the cost of conventional systems.

In Ukraine, the effect has been clear. A newer Shahed version, fitted with turbojet engines, flies three times faster than earlier propeller-driven models. Ukrainian intelligence links the engines to Chinese manufacturers. At $20,000 each, these drones force defenders to spend million-dollar interceptors on disposable targets.

Sanctions after the 1979 revolution crippled Iran’s air force, pushing engineers toward drones. Early models were basic, but Iran copied Western designs—including those from the U.S., West Germany, and Israel—to develop precision strike capabilities. The main challenge was propulsion. Initially, Iran obtained German Limbach engines through black-market dealers. When a Chinese firm later bought the German manufacturer, access became simpler.

How China hides the supply chain

China’s involvement goes beyond direct sales. Investigations show a network of shell companies, many in Hong Kong, that hide where Western-made components end up. Microchips and voltage regulators from firms like Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics often pass through Chinese middlemen before reaching Iran or Russia. While these companies deny military use, tracking the path is difficult.

Iran has since cut its dependence on Western parts, switching to Chinese alternatives. These include improved navigation systems and communication modems, which boosted the Shahed’s accuracy and range. The outcome is a drone that costs less while growing more advanced.

The issue isn’t limited to Iran. Russian forces have deployed Shahed-style drones in Mali, and similar systems have struck U.S. interests in Bahrain. Iran has also shared the design with Ethiopia, Syria, and Venezuela. The U.S. military has responded by developing its own low-cost drones to counter the threat.

Soldiers now see the change firsthand. Air defenses built for a few high-value targets must now handle waves of expendable drones, each capable of precise strikes. The nature of war has shifted—not through new technology, but by exploiting global trade networks.

The Shahed’s strength comes from its basic design. It doesn’t require advanced factories. It only needs a supply chain that spans the globe and markets willing to ignore the consequences.

As these drones spread, conflicts in Europe face similar risks. The same tactics that flooded Ukraine with drones could soon appear elsewhere, turning commercial supply routes into weapons delivery systems.
