Rheinmetall is facing significant delivery delays in its German defense projects, including the Skyranger and Boxer programs. According to official documents, the technology has not yet reached the required level and quality control has gaps.
These production delays threaten Germany’s urgent efforts to strengthen its military. Internal documents from the German army reveal considerable gaps in two major defense projects managed by Rheinmetall: the Skyranger mobile air defense system and the Boxer HWC wheeled armored vehicle.
The German army’s procurement service attributes these problems to insufficient quality and technical maturity. Following the German military buildup, known as the “Zeitenwende”, Rheinmetall has recorded unprecedented profits and seen a significant increase in orders. However, they are under increasing pressure from government officials due to their inability to deliver on time.
The “Schwerer Waffenträger” program is currently experiencing a delay of at least 11 months compared to the agreed-upon schedule. To accelerate production of 123 units, the German government has organized manufacturing in a Rheinmetall factory in Australia, despite additional logistical costs.
Criticism has been severe for the Skyranger project, which is important for filling Germany’s mobile air defense gaps. There are discrepancies between Rheinmetall’s statements and government documents; while CEO Armin Papperger reported only a slight delay of five months, internal documents indicate a much more significant delay.
According to these documents, Germany does not expect to receive the first mass-produced vehicle before August 2027. Qualification tests will be completed by mid-2027. This contrasts sharply with initial budget forecasts, which already planned for several units this year.

The German army has expressed serious concerns about Rheinmetall’s performance in developing the Skyranger. According to the army, Rheinmetall is not sufficiently developing a fully functional wheeled weapon system, and significant improvements are needed.
As a result, the army believes that a final assessment of the system’s capabilities will only be possible by mid-2027. Rheinmetall has defended its reputation as a leading supplier of advanced wheeled weapon systems.
Germany’s military buildup is undergoing significant changes, and the timely delivery of these defense projects is critical to its success. The Bundeswehr is reforming and the delays might impact the country’s defense capabilities.
