Apple’s CEO, John Ternus, described the iPhone Duo as a transformational change.

The foldable iPhone, dubbed iPhone Duo, has been unveiled by Apple, but its success hinges on whether shoppers are willing to pay a premium price of $1,999 to $3,199. The iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer screen, allowing users to run two apps simultaneously.

Apple’s CEO, John Ternus, described the iPhone Duo as “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.” The company is betting that the phone’s unique design, which doubles as a small tablet, will persuade buyers to spend more.

Apple is not the first company to enter the foldable phone market. Samsung has been selling its Galaxy Fold line since 2019, and other companies like Huawei, Google, and Motorola have also released their own foldable phones. However, these devices have remained pricey, with the closest US competitors, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold, starting at around $1,900.

Despite the high price point, tech analysis firm IDC expects global foldable-phone shipments to reach 22.9 million units in 2026, up 12.6% from last year. This would represent just over 2% of the global smartphone market.

Apple’s enormous base of iPhone users could potentially change the equation for the foldable phone market. According to Nabila Popal, a senior research director at IDC, Apple’s entry could fundamentally alter the market’s trajectory. Nabila Popal noted that without Apple, foldable shipments would have declined at a double-digit rate year over year.

IDC forecasts that Apple will ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones by 2027, capturing roughly 40% of the global foldables market. This could make the iPhone Duo a significant player in the market, potentially even becoming a status symbol due to its unique shape and high price point.

The iPhone Duo’s success will depend on how well it resonates with consumers. Its unique design and features, such as improved movie-watching and selfie-taking capabilities, may appeal to some users. However, its high price point may deter others, making it a niche product like the iPhone Air, which saw sales fizzle after early adopters rushed to get the latest tech.

Only time will tell if the iPhone Duo will become a mainstream success or a niche product. As the market continues to evolve, Apple’s entry into the foldable phone market will affect the market. The company’s loyal customer base and brand recognition could help drive sales, but the high price point remains a significant barrier to adoption.

Apple’s loyal customer base is a key factor. They could help drive sales. The high price point is a significant barrier to adoption. It may deter some buyers.
