Google is laying off 12,000 workers, or about 6% of its workforce, becoming the latest tech company to trim staff as the economic boom that the industry rode during the COVID-19 pandemic ebbs.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, the parent company of Google, informed staff Friday at the Silicon Valley giant about the cuts in an email that was also posted on the company’s news blog.

It’s one of the company’s biggest-ever round of layoffs and adding to tens of thousands of other job losses recently announced by Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook parent Meta and other tech companies

Elon Musk tested in court on Friday in a trial that may decide whether a tweet he sent in 2018 cost Tesla investors millions of dollars.

Tesla shareholders are suing the company to recover losses they say they suffered amid Musk’s claim that he had “secured” money to take the company private at $420 per share.

Musk told an attorney representing Tesla shareholders Friday that his tweets were truthful, if limited by the social media platform’s character count.

The Bank of Canada is wading into the fraught and controversial world of digital currencies, launching public consultations this week into how Canadians might use a digital dollar.

A federal lawsuit filed Monday by the city of St. Louis accuses automakers Kia and Hyundai of failing to install industry-standard anti-theft technology, resulting in thousands of vehicle thefts in the Missouri city.
